SIR — It would seem that not a week goes by without a mix of opinions and concerns about the West Somerset Railway, in particular the link to Taunton.

In business planning terms, the reality of any link is not to Taunton but to the UK rail network and onwards to Europe. These networks would profit by having such a link as there would be an extra route for their existing networks.

Bearing such issues in mind, one could better assess cost of sales and overheads in relation to sales volume rather than bandying about anticipated ridiculously large sums of monies for new assets.

I wish I could remember the name of the person who said “you build it and they will come”.

Indeed, they will eventually use the railway as a channel to our wonderful geographic location and its facilities rather than limiting it to rail enthusiasts.
