A NEW initiative born from concern over the lack of facilities for young people on a Minehead estate was officially launched this week. The Cuckoo Meadow Youth Club has been set up and is run entirely by volunteers but has won overwhelming support from a range of agencies, businesses and individuals. Sharon Hill and Tracey Coles are at the helm of the new group and although youngsters aged from five to 18 have been meeting regularly for the past three weeks, the launch proved the perfect platform for the club to formally mark its creation. Activities on offer at its Sainsbury Community hall base include art and craft projects, cooking, sports, computer games, pool and table tennis. The club also promotes healthy eating, living and well being. Police community support officers have already demonstrated their support, with further backing from the West Somerset Crime and Disorder Reduction Partnership, Somerset Youth Service, Knightstone Housing and Minehead town councillor Norman Hercock. In addition, local businessman Paul Gough from Beanies and Collectables has donated many toys and games. Cllr Hercock, pictured cutting the red ribbon to declare the club officially open on Monday night, said the launch had "gone off like a rocket". "There were around 50 young people of varying ages, which shows just how much this facility is needed. "Sharon and Tracey have done an excellent job in getting this off the ground and are to be congratulated on the success of it. "We need to get young people involved in their community and this club will go a long way to achieving that." Photo: Steve Guscott.
