WILDLIFE trust volunteer Elizabeth Atkinson, of Carhampton, will be running a host of children’s events this summer as part of the West Somerset Wildways and Ponds Alive projects.
Ms Atkinson, who co-ordinates events for the Somerset Wildlife Trust, will start with a butterfly walk in Carhampton churchyard on Saturday (August 2) at 2 pm.
Then, she is staging a ‘wildlife bonanza’ in Porlock Community Library and the neighbouring Old School grounds on Wednesday, August 6, from 2 pm to 4.30 pm.
The event will include bug hunts, wildlife stories, art activities, and even pond-making, setting up a barrel pond as part of Ponds Alive.
Carhampton Community Orchard’s annual ‘butterflies and bugs’ event follows on Sunday, August 10, between 2 pm and 4.30 pm, with fun wildlife activities, discoveries, and challenges for the whole family.

The summer’s final event will be the annual moth watch, in Carhampton Community Orchard, on Tuesday, August 12, from 8 pm to 10 pm, led by local moth expert James Penny.
More than 200 species of moths have been recorded in the orchard since 2009.
Elizabeth said: “I started running community wildlife events in our village orchard back in 2015, and it has all grown from there.
“Now, I am running two wildlife projects almost full-time and having a wonderful time.”
Elixabeth is also giving a talk in Dunster National Park Information Centre entitled ‘What’s in your pond?’ at 2 pm on Sunday, September 21, followed by a walk around Dunster’s village ponds in collaboration with Dunster Climate Action Group, as part of the Ponds Alive project’s mission to promote and enhance local freshwater habitats.
All the events are free and suitable for all ages, including adults, and more information can be obtained by emailing Elizabeth at [email protected] or calling 01643 821756.
