WEST Somerset Community College was transformed in to a polling station on Monday when candidates for the Student Executive stood for election.

A week earlier, Elisa Day and colleagues from the district council attended a sixth form assembly to speak about election procedures.

This was followed by a 'hustings' when the candidates addressed the whole of the sixth form to explain why they were standing.

On election day, the college was set up with booths, voting slips and a ballot box and a high percentage of students turned out to vote.

The winners were Katie Bulpin, Kelly Clarke, Paul Hewitt-Avison, Cheryl Dennis and Eleanor Grigg.

Deputy head of sixth form Rosanne Collinson said: "This was a very valuable experience which was both extremely educational and highly enjoyable.

"The students can now approach the actual election with enhanced knowledge, insight and experience."
