AN elderly couple are in hospital after being involved in a collision with three cars in Long Street, Williton, on Monday afternoon. Michael Henry, of Robert Street, suffered serious injuries and was yesterday (Thursday) in a stable condition in Musgrove Park Hospital in Taunton. His wife Mary, who was not so seriously hurt, also remains in hospital. The couple, who are both in their 80s, are believed to have been crossing the road near the Foresters Arms when the accident happened at 2.30pm. Police collision investigators remained at the scene for several hours, with the road reopening to traffic at 6.40pm. The accident - West Somerset's fifth major accident in as many months - has prompted renewed calls for a pedestrian crossing in Long Street, the main route for traffic heading from Bridgwater to Minehead. Local MP Ian Liddell-Grainger also pledged to take the district's road safety case straight to the top. "This is appalling. It is one tragedy after another and I am not prepared to just stand by and watch. "I have pleaded with the county council to do something about our roads but we cannot keep waiting - we have to come up with a solution to help the people of West Somerset survive. "I would appeal for West Somerset Council and the town and parish councils in the district to join me and take our case directly to the Secretary of State." The Bridgwater and West Somerset MP said it was only a matter of time before the death and accident toll started to include children among the victims. "We cannot let this happen. People must be made to take this seriously but in the interim I would appeal to our residents to take extra care on our roads," Mr Liddell-Grainger said. A police spokesman said none of the motorists involved had yet been charged with any offence as a result of Monday's accident.
