Children in Years Three and Four at St Michael’s First School in Minehead have been developing their leadership and organisation skills through the Golden Mile scheme.
The Golden Mile is a health and physical activity initiative accessible to all age groups regardless of ability, and every pupil can get involved by walking, jogging or running around their Golden Mile track within the safety of the school grounds.
It is all about encouraging everyone to lead a healthy and active lifestyle, not about who is the sportiest or crosses the finish line first.
A number of children at the school, part of the West Somerset Academy Trust, have learned how to access the Golden Mile website, print off registers, obtain and set up all the necessary equipment and record laps run by children.
Despite being nervous about having to organise and run the activity for all the children in the school, they now relish the opportunity given to them and enjoy having the responsibility.
