WEST Somerset College has saved over £2.6 million from its staff budget for next year resulting in a number of job losses.

But only three people have had to face compulsory redundancy, and the majority of courses will still be running.

The college did not want to give exact figures and said the job cuts included a number of part-time posts.

But it said the majority of staff facing job losses had been able to be redeployed, to find other work or to take early retirement.

“We have worked closely with colleagues and trade unions, and had been concerned there were going to be many redundancies,” said executive head teacher Peter Elliott.

“But while it is distressing for these staff, to have only three compulsory redundancies is miraculous – better than we had all feared.”

He said the redundancy process had now been completed and contracts for staff involved would come to an end on August 31.
