A GROUP of motorsport students from West Somerset College – who built and looked after two winning cars in a series of amateur races held at top UK circuits – have been declared the champion team at the end of the season.

The seven students of the West Somerset College motor vehicle race team were taking part in the 2016 MG Car Club, Peter Best Insurance Cup race series.

“It’s been a dream year, said Chris Wright, a motor vehicle teacher at the college.

“The students often worked long hours and during holidays to keep the cars in tiptop condition, and the championship was at such iconic circuits as Silverstone and Brands Hatch.”

Under the guidance of Chris, who has top professional motorsport experience, and teacher Andy Bulpin, who holds a motorsport degree, the students who are studying motor engineering completely rebuilt a MG ZR race car.

It went on to win almost every one of the ten races in the series, and was voted best prepared and most reliable car of the championship.

Their teachers decided to challenge them further by seeing if they could turn another car into a second MG ZR racing car – within nine days.

“It went straight out at Silverstone where it won its class in both races," said Chris.
