SIR — Like Captain Warwick (Your Letters October 22), we attended the meeting arranged by WACET and given by Dean and Dyball, the developers of the proposed Watchet marina and housing estate on the East Quay.

We found it enlightening that one of Dean and Dyball's representatives referred to the marina as a "pond" with water retained only to a height of a little over a meter above the existing silt level.

The thought of having to peer over the edge of the harbour at boats over 20 feet below is not an appealing prospect, nor does it bear any resemblance to the artist's impression we have all become familiar with.

Comparisons were also drawn, rather bizarrely, with marina developments in Plymouth and Southampton, and interestingly no concrete evidence was supplied that such a scheme would in fact prove successful.

The only certainty was that an estate of 18 dwellings would be built on the East Quay.

It seems obvious that the East Quay has the potential to provide an attraction to all visitors, in all weathers, at all times of the year. A housing estate quite clearly will not help the regeneration of our town.

Dean and Dyball are trying to sell a product with no guarantee — would you buy something under these conditions?

As for burying the hatchet, we would like to bury it in the heart of this abysmal and ill-conceived scheme.

Nick and Lynda Cotton,

Watchet.
