A DOG trapped halfway down one of the area’s highest coastal cliffs after falling over the edge during a walk with its owner, was rescued by Watchet coastguards on Saturday, none the worse for its experience.

"The incident happened near Lilstock Tower and luckily the dog became stuck half way down rather than falling all the way, which could have proven fatal," a coastguard spokesman said.

"The dog walker did exactly the right thing and did not attempt to rescue the dog, but dialled 999 for the coastguard."

On arrival at scene, cliff rescue technician Gary Morgan was lowered down the cliff and was able to attach a lead to the dog before persuading it to enter a specialist animal rescue bag.

"The team was able to recover both Gary and the dog and haul them back up the cliffs to safety," the spokesman added. "The dog was uninjured and reunited with its owner.

"We continue to remind dog walkers to keep their pets on leads near unguarded cliff edges. In an emergency, they should dial 999 and ask for the coastguard."
