A HANDFUL of West Somerset residents could be in for a surprise two-wheeled Christmas present thanks to the skills of pupils from Minehead Middle School. Under the guidance of teacher Tony Bailey, a group of youngsters has been helping to recondition unclaimed bikes through a scheme initiated by Crime Prevention Panel member Des Parsons. Mr Parsons, who is a Magna representative on the panel, began reconditioning bicycles bought from police auctions several years ago to help people who would otherwise not be able to benefit from new bikes. Since then, his work has won official backing from local police officers, who now pass on any bicycles which remain unclaimed at police stations in the district. Mr Parsons then enlists the help of Mr Bailey and his band of school pupils to overhaul the bikes before trying to find deserving new homes. The team currently has ten new bikes in need of owners and anyone who would like to nominate a 'good cause' to receive one should contact Mr Parsons on 01643 821726. The cycles range from small children's bikes through to bigger sizes for older teenagers.
