EXMOOR is all set to inspire locals and visitors with events and suggestions for Discover National Parks Fortnight, which starts tomorrow (Saturday) and runs until April 21.
This year’s campaign comes 70 years after the 1949 National Parks and Access to the Countryside Act that paved the way for UK national parks, with Exmoor designated five years later.
Tim Braund, Exmoor National Park Authority’s head of information and communication, said: “Many of the events and experiences we’ll be promoting are free or very low-cost, meaning getting outside to enjoy some of the country’s most beautiful landscapes needn’t cost the earth.”
Exmoor is one of 15 national parks around the UK taking part in the two-week celebration, and it kicks off on Monday (April 8) when an expert from Combe Martin Museum will lead a Seashore Safari. Another will be held on April 17. Combe Martin Museum’s website has details.
The first in a series of free guided walks is on Wednesday, April 10 with a free guided walk to discover ‘Hidden Dunster’ takes place on Wednesday (April 10). Booking is essential; phone 01598 752509.
Next Sunday, April 14, the Exmoor Pony Centre is holding an activity day from 11am to 3pm, with pony rides, grooming, crafts, games and refreshments. No need to book, but there are small charges for individual activities. See the Exmoor Pony Centre website for details.
One of the popular Big Adventure Days takes place on Wednesday, April 17, on Haddon Hill. Between 10am and 4pm, families can go on a bug hunt, help build a giant den, try their hand at campfire cooking, get faces face painted, go on a nature walk, learn forest skills – or just simply sit back and enjoy the moorland views.
More information can be found on the family events link on the Exmoor National Park website.
Two other guided walks are on the agenda – ‘Beautiful Bossington’ on April 19 and North Hill on April 20. The are free but must be booked on 01598 752509.
The full programme is available from National Park Centres or on the Visit Exmoor website.
