In a letter from Malcolm Cornish and Maureen Newey (Free Press June 28) about a bench that they think someone deliberately destroyed, it was destroyed in a heath fire earlier in the year.

It was certainly not deliberate. I regularly walk up there and saw the damage at the time, so I can assure you that it was not mindless vandals.
