SIR — Could you please print this as an open letter to David Cameron:

Dear Mr Cameron — The responsibility for planning permission for a new Hinkley Point C has passed from West Somerset Council to the Government in the guise of the IPC.

We are told that the IPC are a group of experts who have the necessary expertise to make a wise decision.

At the moment, to us, they are a group who do not understand the effect that the building of the power plant will have on the real local people, the people who live within a few hundred metres of the construction site fence.

In their initial comments, the IPC do not consider that we are sufficiently important to merit a special hearing in their preliminary inquiries.

Combwich and Cannington have such a hearing and they deserve it, but the local hamlets dotted around the site periphery will suffer most and for many years.

We are the hamlets in the parish of Stogursey. We have not opposed a power plant as we think it is good for the country and for Somerset, if not for ourselves.

We have sought to limit the damage to our lives and to our homes.

We are not the sort of people to chain ourselves to trees or generally make a nuisance of ourselves. We are the sort of people who have been practising the "big society" since you were a small boy, which is why we are a good community.

Consequently, Mr Cameron, you will understand our grievance.

If you want a "big society", you should not kick those who practise it in the teeth. If you reward the people who shout loudest and make themselves a nuisance then that is the type of society you will get.

Can I therefore respectfully ask you to ensure that the parish of Stogursey and the hamlets are allocated a special hearing by the IPC.

Peter Farmery,

Shurton.
