SIR — I recently found a stray/lost dog on the mini roundabout in Alcombe; it was in the middle of the road and very likely to cause an accident.

I managed to catch hold of the dog and attempted to find out where it lived. It appeared that the dog had been wandering on the road for some time and no-one knew where it lived.

It was 8.30pm so I took the dog to the local police station and spoke to the control centre via the telephone outside, only to be told that the police would not take in stray dogs and that I would have to ring the council and get the dog warden to collect the dog.

I did this and to my horror was told that the council did not provide a dog warden service out of hours and I would have to keep the dog until 9am the next morning and then ring back.

This is an absolute outrage, it would appear that it is more sensible to allow stray dogs to cause traffic accidents than to try and get them to a place of safety.

If the police are no longer capable of taking in strays overnight then our council must provide the service before someone is killed.
