A Yeovil Cremat-orium employee has been suspended pending a disciplinary hearing next month after Yeovil grabbed national headlines for the wrong reasons.

As reported last week, members of a grieving family demand the employee be sacked after he allegedly interrupted a funeral service in the rudest of ways, saying time was up and asking people to leave.

The employee re-mained on duty but a meeting this week led to him being suspended on full pay, and a disciplinary hearing organised for next month.

The incident was featured in at least two national newspapers as well as regional television.

Yeovil Crematorium and Cemetery Committee only issued a brief statement last week because town clerk Alan Tawse, who deals with media enquiries, was on holiday.

Mr Tawse has since returned, and talking to The Clarion on Tuesday, he said: "An investigation is currently underway into allegations made about the recent conduct of a member of the crematorium staff.

"That investigation is being carried out in accordance with agreed procedures, and it would be inappropriate for me, at this stage, to comment any further on the matter."

Mr Tawse issued another statement two days later, revealing the employee had been suspended pending next month's disciplinary hearing.

u If accusations made against the staff member are proven to be true, the committee will be much embarrassed.

In June this year, the committee issued a press release to promote an open day, saying: "Staff employed at the crematorium work to the highest ethical standards and take a professional approach to all of their work."
