SOMERSET County Council is calling on its contactors to boycott the purchase of French goods as part of its on-going campaign to back the county's farmers.
Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott has already been asked to invoke powers enabling the county to control the source of foods used in schools and old people's homes.
Council leader Cllr Chris Clarke said he would use the beef crisis to reiterate these calls to Mr Prescott made earlier this year in response to the GM foods scares.
"As a rural county, we are firmly behind our local farmers in their protests against the ban of beef in France," said Cllr Clarke.
"As a result, we will be urging our suppliers to boycott French goods and buy British and use Somerset produce wherever they can until the present situation is resolved."
