WEST Somerset has a quarter representation on Somerset County Council's new cabinet.

The Conservative-controlled authority formally appointed its new line-up of councillors who will be responsible for leading it at its first full meeting since going to the polls on Tuesday.

And Cllr Christine Lawrence, who represents the Dunster division, has retained her role as cabinet member for health and wellbeing, with Dulverton and Exmoor's Cllr Frances Nicholson keeping responsibility for children and families.

Cllr John Osman was re-elected leader but with the additional responsibility for the customers and communities portfolio.

Cllr David Hall retained his position as deputy leader but also has responsibility for business, inward investment and policy.

The other cabinet members are Cllr David Huxtable (resources), Cllr Harvey Siggs (highways and transport), Cllr William Wallace (adult social care) and Cllr Anna Groskop (HR and transformation).

Cllr Osman said he felt privileged to have the backing of members and be chosen to lead the council.

"We have a great cabinet team in place that will deliver the best for Somerset residents and provide excellent services that also give value for money," he said.

"We are committed to serve the community and put Somerset first and we will ensure the council continues to listen, engage and care."

The council's new chairman is Cllr David Fothergill, with Cllr John Denbee elected as vice-chairman.
