SOMERSET County Council is looking to recruit new volunteers – people willing to give their knowledge and skills to benefit their community.

There are several openings, including working in libraries, giving lifts to appointments and helping young people.

Age is no barrier – one of the council’s oldest volunteers is 86 while others are teenagers.

Cllr David Fothergill, leader of the county council, said: “Volunteering can be hugely beneficial to the local community and to an individual. Acts of kindness, no matter how big or small, can make a difference.

“We are grateful for the time and skills volunteers contribute to Somerset.”

Among the opportunities to volunteer with Route 1 Advocacy which offers the chance to support and speak up for young people.

There are also vacancies for volunteer drivers who use their own vehicle to provide transport for eligible people needing a lift to get to places and appointments. Drivers are reimbursed and are supported by a transport officer.
