Fete organisers look to reach £90,000
ORGANISERS of this year’s Macmillan Cancer Support Garden Fete in Bicknoller are hoping to raise £3,222 in order to bring the total raised over the years since 1990 to £90,000.
Since 1990, there has been a garden fete every year at Old Orchard, Trendle Lane, Bicknoller, except for one cancellation in 2021 due to Covid.
What started as a small ‘one-off’ event grew each year and it has become, for many people, the highlight of their summer activities.
The fete, set in a garden with views to the Quantock Hills, Brendon Hills, and Exmoor, will follow its traditional pattern with music played by West Somerset Brass Band.
The games are original, created by the late Bill Pumphrey over the years, and include something for all ages from two to 92.
Teas will include sausage rolls, tarts, and a variety of cakes, which are always popular.
Apart from the grand raffle there will be a quilt raffle, the quilt having been made by Sheila Draper, of Sampford Brett, and guess the name of the bear.
A range of home-made cards and a stall of crafts have become familiar at the fete and will be here again this year, as well as a plant stall.
Granny’s attic is back this year and will include a large range of children’s nearly-new, good quality clothing – age range 0 to seven years, and there will also be a good selection of adult clothing, of good quality.
The organisers ask regular supporters and new supporters to go along and join in.
At £4 entry (£1 for children) the fete’s prices have not changed over the years and the teas and goods for sale prove value for money.
Car parking will be at or near the village hall, with toilets available there and at Old Orchard.
Those with mobility issues can be dropped off at Old Orchard.
The fete starts at the usual 2.15 pm, on Bank Holiday Saturday, August 23.
Should the weather change and rain forecast, as much as possible will be transferred to Bicknoller Village Hall.
Beach dog walk for charity
THE Cinnamon Trust is holding a walk along Minehead beach, and a dog-themed bring and buy to raise money for the charity on Sunday, August 17, at the Jubilee Cafe, The Esplanade, Minehead.
The walk will start at 9.30 am, and the dog-themed bring and buy will be held from 9.30 am to 12.30 pm.
Starting at the Jubilee Café, the dog walkers will go along the dog-friendly area of the beach, with the option of going further to Culvercliffe, and will finish back at the Jubilee Café.
Everybody is welcome to join, with or without a dog, and they can walk as far, or as short a distance as they choose.
Breakfasts will be available at the Jubilee Café.
Anybody not able to join the walk, can go along for a breakfast, and the bring and buy, which will be available throughout the morning.
The Cinnamon Trust is the only national charity for the elderly and terminally ill and their pets, and information will be available all morning for people to learn more about the charity and how it works.
Anybody with dog-related items they would like to donate to raise money for the charity, The Cinnamon Trust would be very grateful.
Please contact Karen on 07896 259462 to make arrangements.
Walking for Ukraine ambulance
A WALKING group from Williton has completed a sponsored walk for two members of the group who are fund-raising to buy an ambulance and take it themselves to Ukraine.
The 14 walkers, whose average age is 76 years, raised more than £1,500 toward the £10,000 total which is needed to buy the vehicle and equip it with medical supplies.
The pair will then drive the vehicle themselves to Ukraine, where they will hand it over to medics who can take in on to the front line of the war.

SKYPARK anniversary celebrations
BUTLIN’S Minehead holiday resort has been celebrating the first anniversary of opening its exciting £2.5 million playground SKYPARK.
The playground was designed to be truly inclusive and interactive and has seen more than 140,000 energetic children of all abilities playing in it and exploring the six play zones championing positive emotions.
It has epic climbing towers, intertwining slides, the UK’s longest swingline at 138 feet long, wheelchair-accessible features, including trampolines and ramps, as well as a place of calm in the unique Sound Domo playing 18 relaxing sounds.
Access is included in the price of all family breaks and day passes, with last-minute breaks and day visits throughout summer.
Not only can children climb, swing, and bounce around SKYPARK on a day visit, but also paddle and play in the Splash Waterworld pool in two-hour swim slots, experience all the thrills on the fairground rides, and performances from the likes of Peppa Pig and Extreme Mountain Bike Show throughout the day in the Skyline Pavilion.
Resort director Craig Goodwin said: “We are delighted to be celebrating one year since our SKYPARK opened, it has added a real ‘wow factor’ to our resort and showcases why we are the home of entertainment’.
“Guest feedback has been overwhelmingly positive, and our team has loved witnessing the joy on families’ faces as they experience the new addition on their holiday or during their day visit.
“Nowhere else offers a playground quite like this, with a 33-feet climbing tower, the UK’s longest swing line, and inclusive wheelchair-accessible equipment, all alongside our incredible entertainment.
“From The Masked Singer to West End-quality original productions, a traditional fairground, and a huge pool with slides and lazy rivers, there is so much more included in the price compared to anywhere else in the staycation market.”
