WATCHET’S Community Bookshop has distributed its first grants of the new season.

The bookshop opened in 2009, principally to support the Cystic Fibrosis Trust following the death of founders Alan and Melanie Woollam’s son Tom.

Melanie presented a £1000 cheque to Cystic Fibrosis Trust representative Serena Williams who attended the ceremony with her daughter, Emily, who has cystic fibrosis.

The bookshop also raises money for local causes and there were three recipients in the latest round.

Toby Bryant received £350 towards the reprinting of A L Wedlake’s ‘A History of Watchet’, and Sally Lownes, of the Coastal Community Team, also received £350 to equip the children’s craft area at the street fair.

Pam Freeman was given £200 towards the printing of a leaflet describing a walk around Watchet for less mobile people.

Watchet Community Bookshop’s licence for its premises on The Esplanade will not be renewed when it runs out next February.

The committee is actively considering alternative premises but nothing concrete has emerged so far.

Despite the uncertainty handing over the bookshop’s future, the committee still hopes to reach a target of £100,000 raised for the trust since 2009.
