SIR — West Somerset Council would like to thank Mr Spear (Your Letters March 26) for bringing the dog fouling issue at the Mineral Line in Watchet to our attention.
We agree entirely that residents and tourists should not have to endure dog's mess in public places.
It is an offence under the new Dog Orders not to clear up dog mess on land to which the public is entitled or permitted to have access including, but not limited to, parks, public open spaces and highways.
This order applies to the Mineral Line and there are signs in the area to remind people to clear up after their pets.
Whilst the dog warden already patrols the area, we will increase the number of patrols.
However, the warden service cannot patrol any site continuously. We need the community to help us target dog patrols to the maximum effect.
If anyone sees a dog owner who does not clear up after a pet, we urge them to phone our customer services team on 01643 703704 to report where the offence took place and at what time. We particularly welcome information on persistent offenders. All calls are treated in confidence.
The council knows that most dog owners are responsible and clear up after their pets. However, we are also aware that there is a minority who do not.
We urge the minority to think twice. Dog fouling in public places presents a potential health risk, especially for vulnerable groups such as children. It also spoils the environment for everyone.
If communities are prepared to work with the council to tackle dog fouling, we can help make sure our open spaces can be enjoyed by the whole community, including pets in most cases, as well as by visitors who play a vital part in the local economy.
