SIR — Last Thursday along with the rest of the country, my daughter went to collect her A Level results from West Somerste Community College. Unfortunately they were not as good as she had hoped and she was rejected by the university of her choice.
After a very frustrating time trying to contact UCAS as instructed, first by internet and then by telephone as well, we finally got through. To say that the person who took her call was less than helpful is an undestatement. Faced with a thoroughly demoralised child, and the UCAS computer system that crashed, we decided to return to college to seek help.
The purpose of my letter is to openly thank Mr Stannet and Mr Hardingham who took the time, several hours in fact, to assist her and other students firstly with kind reassurance and then with practical help, helping her navigate her way through the clearing process, offering the use of college computers, guiding her through a wealth of other courses, lending telephone lines and at times ringing constantly engaged numbers in an attempt to secure her a place and rebuild her self worth.
Your front page article of last week, 'Students record results', not only reflected the hard work by the students but the wonderful teaching and support network that surrounds them all not just the incredibly able.
So thank you Mr Stannet and Mr Hardingham: UCAS should look to you both as an example of how it should be done, and if your son/daughter should be lucky enough to be attending WSCC then they will I'm sure benefit from the same care and concern that was shown to my daughter.
