ATHLETES at the West Somerset Community College have enjoyed a long and successful season this year which reached its climax on Tuesday June 25 with the college's sports day.
Among the highlights were two new records, set by Jamie Munroe in the Year 12 100m (11.00 seconds) and Ryan Bosley in the Year 9 100m (12.15 seconds).
The sports were notable for the high turnout of students, particularly in the Open 1500m where 61 girls and 63 boys competed.
Other key achievements by the college's athletes include the following:
AAA County Championships at Millfield on Saturday May 11: Y12, Andrew Baker, 1st 5000m (Championship Record); Y9, Stacey Sowden, 2nd Long Jump; Y11, Rob Collins, 3rd Javelin and 5th 800m; Y9, Ryan Bosley, 3rd 100m and 5th 200m; Y9, Luke Milton, 4th, 1500m; Y9, Magnus Cordran, 7th Long Jump.
Somerset Schools Athletics Championships at Millfield on Saturday June 15: 15 students were selected to represent the area team and five were placed in the top three - Y13, Mike Auton, 1st 1500m (County Champion); Y12, Andrew Baker, 1st 3000m (County Champion); Y9, Ryan Bosley 3rd 200m; Y9, Stacey Sowden, 3rd Long Jump; Y9, Lisa Hayward 3rd Discus. Also competing were Andrew Wilson, Luke Milton, Magnus Cordran, Rob Collins and Eddy Humphries.
South West Athletics Championships at Bourne-mouth on Saturday June 22: Three students from the Somerset Schools Championships were selected to represent Somerset: Y13, Mike Auton, 4th 1500m; Y12, Andrew Baker, 5th 3000m; Y9, Stacey Sowden, 12th Long Jump.
Sedgemoor Area Championships at Chilton on Tuesday June 28: Boys' team became area champions.
