A CYCLIST was airlifted to hospital after falling 40 feet down a cliff face near Porlock on Wednesday afternoon. Firefighters from Minehead, local coastguards and a crew from RAF Chivenor were drafted in to help in the incident, which happened near Hurlstone Point. A spokesman for the newly combined Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service said that, luckily, the man had a mobile phone with him and was able to alert the emergency services. "Had he not had this, it would have been very unlikely that anybody would have come across him due to his location off the beaten track." However, emergency crews still had difficulty finding him because he had no idea of his exact location. Eventually he used the sighting of the coastguard team as a guide to lead the helicopter crew to his position. The man was cycling at the time of the accident and his bike fell to the bottom of the cliff, leaving him 300ft from the bottom of the cliff.
