ANIMAL-lovers in Minehead are being invited to step out for a ‘Big Walk’ on bank holiday Monday May 4 to raise awareness of an organisation which gives help and support to elderly and seriously ill people who have problems looking after their pets.

Karen Minto and Holly May will lead their local ‘Big Walk’ in support of the Cinnamon Trust, which was founded in 1985 by Averil Jarvis and named after her corgi.

The singer Sir Paul McCartney is patron of the charity, which now has more than 17,000 volunteers nationwide.

The free event is open to all walkers and their dogs, meeting at Minehead’s Jubilee Café at 9.30 am.

Those wishing to receive a free goody bag on the day are asked to register in advance via the official event page.

Karen and Holly are two of the thousands of Cinnamon Trust volunteers offering practical support such as dog walking, cat grooming, pet transport to vet appointments, bird cage cleaning, and short-term fostering during hospital stays.

Karen has been volunteering with the Cinnamon Trust for nine years.

She began by walking Jack, a nine‑year‑old Yorkshire terrier, never imagining that nearly a decade later she would still be by his side.

Jack, now 18, has slowed down and sometimes rides in a dog buggy for the tiring parts, but still enjoys his outings.

As well as walking Jack, Karen takes him to the groomer and collects any medication he needs, offering the kind of practical, day‑to‑day support Cinnamon Trust provides to thousands of pet owners across the UK.

She also gives local talks about the charity and has organised walks along Minehead beach with a dog‑themed bring‑and‑buy sale to raise funds.

Karen said: “Along with holding the ‘Big Walk’, it is fantastic to see people and dogs enjoying themselves while furthering awareness of what the charity can offer people, and pets, in the community, both as volunteers and as beneficiaries of the services provided.

“Jack and his owner really demonstrate just how the Cinnamon Trust means so much to so many.

“It is like no other charity and I am pleased to have the chance to help increase awareness of it.”

Holly began volunteering as a dog walker just over a year ago.

By bringing people together in a simple, social way, both Holly and Karen hope the walk will not only build community spirit but also ensure more local people in need become aware of the support available to help them stay with the pets they love.

With dogs of all shapes and sizes expected to turn out in Cinnamon Trust bandanas, the Minehead ‘Big Walk’ promises to be a lively gathering as well as a powerful awareness‑raiser for a charity which keeps people and pets together when they need each other most.

Those who sign up online to the ‘Big Walk’ before April 21 will receive a free goody bag, supported by ethical pet brands, including Nature’s Menu and The Pet’s Larder.
