CHRISTIAN Dean, a Year 8 pupil, has presented Minehead Middle School with a new House Shield to replace the one used since the houses were renamed in the late 1970s.

The shield is presented in assembly to the captain of the house whose children have gained the most achievement cards in the previous week for effort in work, attitude, helpfulness and cheerfulness.

The competition is fiercely contested week by week, with the weekly totals being added together to produce an overall winning house at the end of the year, which is presented with the Donald Hawkes Cup for Achievement.

Christian made the wooden shield, with the school emblem of a gryphon attached, in his spare time under the guidance of Rod Dover, curriculum advisor for design and technology
