Final confirmation has been received that South Somerset District Council has been awarded Lottery money to upgrade the athletics track at Yeovil Recreation Centre - popularly known as Mudford Rec.

The announcement was hardly a surprise as detailed work plans and opening ceremonies have been discussed at previous meetings of the council.

Ex-England footballer Trevor Brooking, now of Sport England, has been mentioned as a possibility for the ribbon cutting procedure, for example.

Official and final confirmation of the £134,775 grant was received just before Easter.

Work is scheduled to start at the end of this month and should be completed in about three months - with the official opening being set for August 26th.

Senior sports and recreation officer Lynda Bagley said: "The award will help to ensure that south Somerset has one of the best athletics facilities in the region. I'm grateful to work colleagues, Yeovil Olympiads Athletics Club and other partners who have helped this project happen."

Some areas of the athletics ground will be available during the period of work. More information is available from Mrs Bagley on 01935 444556.
