THREE West Somerset beaches will be having a community clean-up this and next weekend as part of the national Big Spring Beach Clean being run by a marine conservation charity.

The call has gone out for volunteers to come along and join in the cleaning – and get free cake and hot drinks at some venues – as Surfers Against Sewage organises over 550 beach cleans around the UK.

An expected 20,000 volunteers are expected to clean up the country’s beaches over the next few weeks and help rid them of plastic pollution.

On the back of the clean-ups, the charity is also promoting its new Plastic Free Coastlines campaign, encouraging individuals, groups, businesses and local government to stop using avoidable, single use plastics.

The West Somerset clean-ups are taking place at:

* Porlock Weir on Saturday (April 7) from 10am to midday. Volunteers meet in the beach car park and there will be free hot drinks and cake in the pub afterwards.

* Culvercliffe, Minehead, Saturday from 2pm to 4pm. Volunteers meet at the end of the seafront/start of Culvercliffe walk. Organisers are hoping volunteers will meet for (paid for) drinks in the pub afterwards.

* Kilve – on Sunday April 15, from 11am to 1pm. Volunteers meet at the beach car park.

West Somerset organisers of Surfers Against Sewage said everyone is welcome – the more volunteers the better.

The charity will provide kit but people can bring their own gloves, litter-pickers and bags if they wish. They are encouraged to dress for the weather and sturdy footwear is recommended.
