BUSINESSES in Williton have united in a bid to fight the Sure Start facility being built on Killick Way car park.

The traders and service providers fear that the centre, which supports children under four and their families, will lead to at least 45 lost car parking spaces from the current 115.

Traders say they will lose a great deal of custom if the car park is reduced and the village's chamber of commerce has said it is "vehemently opposed" to Killick Way being chosen.

Businesses opposed to the Killick Way site include supermarkets, estate agents, a pub, hairdressers and the village post office.

Chris Warren, of the chamber of commerce, said: "We don't want our car park blocked off by this scheme.

"We want Sure Start in Williton but this is an abysmal place to put it - whoever decided to put it on the car park could not have chosen a more contentious place.

"We are vehemently opposed to that site. It will be a big blow to business with around third of the car spaces lost."

He added: "We have all been working together lately to regenerate Williton and we don't want this built on that spot because it will spoil our efforts."

Williton Parish Council wants the development built at St Peter's First School as it feels the car park is a dangerous site.

Councillors also argue that some parents will be forced to drop off older children at the school and then have push a pram to Killick Way.
