SIR — Over the past few days, we as a nation have been much reminded of the horror and catastrophe of the First World War, and by commemorating we have perhaps done something to bond ourselves with the people who suffered and lost so much. But at the same time, by the happiest of contrasts, we have had the rare pleasure of watching the Commonwealth Games, with thousands of athletes and supporters from 50 countries great and small coming together – in rivalry, yes, but also in friendship and goodwill. It is such a coming together of the Commonwealth for a great purpose that was first and almost uniquely demonstrated in the Burma campaign (the last of the Second World War). And the Burma Star members have pleasure in inviting residents and visitors to a short V J Day Memorial Service next Friday (August 15) at 10.45am in Blenheim Gardens, Minehead, at the Burma Star Memorial near the Blenheim Road gates.
