SIR — At last it is out in the open, if money is to be found to provide a safe crossing of the railway line at Watchet, it must be from Watchet residents.

Well, I am a Watchet resident and if it is my money that is going to be spent, then I want a bridge which is usable by everyone, not just the fortunate with two legs and plenty of 'puff'.

There are two possibilities. One is to widen the existing road bridge to allow for a footway to be added to one side. This would be very expensive and extremely disruptive to traffic.

The second idea, and one I would hope was worth considering, is to attach a "bailey" bridge to the side of the road bridge with pedestrian access on the top of the railway embankment on either side - suitably surfaced and with safety railing of course.

I have been given to understand that there is sufficient width to do this and still leave the requisite safety distance from passing trains.

This, also, would be very expensive but would provide good access to the town for the future and for all residents.

Remove the existing bridge, but build for the future, not just the present.

Mrs E Crane,

Watchet.
