RESIDENTS and staff of Magna West Somerset Housing Association said a fond farewell to long serving support officer Beryl Hopkins last week. Initially employed by West Somerset District Council, Beryl had worked with residents and the community in Dulverton and Brushford for over 12 years. She retired at the end of June. She is well known in the area for always going that extra mile to help, often organising events such as darts, bingo and monthly cream teas, and trips away to places like Teignmouth, Barnstaple, even mystery tours. In 2003, Beryl was presented with an award for 'Services to the Community' by the High Sheriff of Somerset. Senior support officer for Magna, Neil Bliss said, "We're very sorry to lose Beryl, she'll be sorely missed. She is one of those people who would do anything for anyone." Beryl was presented with flowers and gifts from staff and residents who threw her a surprise retirement party in celebration of her hard work and dedication over the years. Beryl said: "I think mostly I shall miss the daily visits to residents. Over the years they've become more like friends. "Fortunately, I live nearby so I'll still be able to join them for some of the events." Beryl is pictured, centre, receiving flowers from Magna staff.
