CAMPAIGNERS fighting to save Blue Anchor’s seafront toilets took a major step forward this week by forming a community interest company.
The CIC will bid for funds to keep the facility open after its scheduled closure in April.
“We are going hell for leather to raise funds and I will be doing the paperwork over Christmas,” said Jeff Williams, chairman of Old Cleeve Parish Council and one of five directors of the non-profit-making company.
A £12,000 fund to finance the toilets for the first year already stands at over £3,000 and the parish council has agreed to provide a further £3,600 from an increased rates precept.
Cllr Williams said it was “all systems go” to get a capital grant for repairs and alterations to the 60-year-old toilets.
It was planned to keep them open in their present form next season before downsizing the facility and making part of the building available for a commercial let.
Other directors are Alison Hart, of Home Farm, Ruth Chatterton, of the Driftwood Café, police officer Andy Ware and parish councillor Margaret Smith.
To become a Blue Anchor toilets sponsor, donations should be sent to Home Farm, Blue Anchor Seafront, Minehead TA24 6JS
