SIR — I was amazed to read that there were plans to remove the bench at the top of Goviers Lane on Doniford Road in Watchet (Free Press June 21).

This is a much needed amenity.

It is a resting place for old and young alike carrying shopping up the hill before going home.

It is a place to sit whilst waiting for the 106 bus en route to Minehead or Blue Anchor, and also a pick up point for other routes.

Having limited mobility myself, I need to sit when waiting for the bus. Yes, there is a seat in Liddymore Road around the corner, but you wouldn't be able to request the bus to stop as it doesn't pass it.

The issue of young people 'hanging around' when they get off the school buses - I agree, there is noise and a number of people but only for a short time, they soon disperse.

Young people 'hang around with mates', most of us did in our younger days. If there are problems of anti-social behaviour let us address that issue.

They are Watchet's young people and belong to this town and are part of our community, not an anonymous group.

Let us remember that not everyone has a car to jump into when shopping or going out. Many walk or go by public transport. We need that bench to wait and rest on and pass the time of day with friends and neighbours.

Please keep the bench where it is.

Watchet.
