THE Avenue in Minehead is to undergo major repairs by Somerset County Council. It is to be resurfaced and the damaged water channels and kerbstones will be repaired with natural stone. The first phase will begin on Sunday and will take up to four nights to complete. The road will be closed to traffic between 5pm and 7am. The next phase, to replace damaged channels and kerbs, will be carried out during the normal working day. A one-way system will be in operation and some car parking spaces will be temporarily removed. Around Easter, the scheme will enter its final stage when the replacement road surface is installed over a maximum of two consecutive nights. County Cllr Tony Shire, portfolio holder for highways, said: "This is a major scheme which will improve the appearance of this magnificent street as well as make the road surface sound again. "The work has been planned to cause as little disruption as possible, and I hope people will bear with us throughout the implementation of these essential repairs." Minehead's county Cllr Ian Galloway praised the scheme and said: "I am glad that the county council has recognised how vital this expensive upgrading is for the town."
