THREE aspiring young chefs from the Greater Exmoor area are to serve up canapés for the Houses of Parliament.
The trio took part in the annual Exmoor Young and Aspiring Chef event held in the West Somerset Community College, Minehead, to celebrate the creativity, passion, and promise of young culinary talent from across the area.
Over the next 12 months the youngsters will now each represent Exmoor’s young culinary arts with a number of celebrations and engagements planned, including the Houses of Parliament event.
Visit Exmoor business support officer Max Lawrence said their involvement would help to raise the profile of local food producers and the richness of Exmoor’s food heritage.
The young and aspiring chef event was organised by Visit Exmoor as part of its commitment to the Eat Exmoor guide, which helps residents and visitors alike to enjoy Exmoor’s finest culinary experiences from hidden gems in cosy cafes to the most tantalising dishes in local restaurants, and the best of artisanal produce, to warm, welcoming pubs, and its Exmoor and Coast Centre of Excellence for Hospitality, a partnership of area stakeholders and businesses working together to promote opportunity, training, and education in hospitality.
Mr Lawrence said it shone a light on the area’s ‘exceptional artisan suppliers’ and the next generation of chefs inspired by the landscapes, heritage, and produce of Exmoor.
Taking part this year were Maddie Kennealy, aged 15, from South Molton Community College, West Somerset Community College’s Blake Jennings, aged 16, and Lauren Lewis, aged 21, of Somerset Larder.
Rather than focusing on competing, they showcased their abilities by producing memorable dishes for professional judges Phil Trevett and Rob Marshall, from Somerset Larder.
Mr Lawrence said: “Their skill, discipline, and flair demonstrated the strength of emerging talent within the region.
“The day was a celebration of the region’s wonderful producers and the culinary talent that brings their ingredients to life.”
Mr Lawrence said the event reflected the strength of Exmoor’s food culture and the importance of supporting young people who aspire to work in the industry.
Visit Exmoor chief executive Emma Thomasson said: “The event demonstrated the energy, ambition, and potential of young people across the region and the vital role they will play in shaping the future of Exmoor’s hospitality and food sectors.”
Ms Thomasson highlighted the value of nurturing local talent, championing local suppliers, and providing platforms where emerging chefs can grow in confidence and gain meaningful experience.
Trophies were presented by West Somerset MP Rachel Gilmour, who congratulated the young trio on their commitment and creativity.
The event was sponsored by Bidfood and The Sausage Man, Hospitality Assured, and Bridgwater and Taunton College Trust.
Ms Thommason said: “We are so proud of all our incredible local producers, food, and drink retailers, and eateries across the Greater Exmoor area.
“In what have been challenging times in recent years, they have kept on wowing us with new, innovative, exceptional produce and service.
“When you buy local, you really are getting a real taste of Exmoor.”
