MEMORIES of Watchet’s colourful heritage and characters have been brought to life in a giant mural on a wall at the end of the town’s Esplanade Lane which was officially unveiled at a celebration last Saturday.

Commissioned by Watchet Arts Group (WAG), and painted by local artist Pat Dennis, the mural is on the garden wall of Esplanade House.

It pays tribute to the town’s nautical and agricultural past, woven into Turneresque impressions of ships and the sea and featuring characters who are still remembered in the town.

Pat, who previously created a mural in Watchet’s Old Mineral Yard, said: “I have symbolised the town’s seagoing traditions with a portrait of Tim Green who, before his recent death, was well known as one of the country’s finest marine rope-work craftsmen.

“Esplanade House was once a farm so that was an excuse to include animals, birds and even butterflies!”

Watchet Mayor Cllr John Irven reminded guests that the idea of town murals was originated by WAG founder the late Tim Prior and his wife Judy as part of an aim to provide all forms of art in public spaces for everyone to enjoy.

WAG chairman Molly Quint said: “We are thrilled by what Pat has done. The mural has added to the attractiveness of The Esplanade and has already become a talking point for both visitors and residents.”

The mural was 'opened' by Esplanade House owners Paul and Barbara Levy.
