SIR — I have an alternative perspective to the views expressed on public rights of way by Brenda Prentice and John Sims (Your Letters December 21 and 28).
Public bodies have a responsibility to take a balanced view in the decisions that they make. I am not surprised that such decisions often conflict with the narrower view of some pressure groups. I do not see this as a failure of our local councils.
Public rights of way must be respected. However, this does not mean that they must be re-established where they have deviated from their definitive line, whatever the cost or other considerations.
An application for a diversion of Lady Harriet's Drive at Hartford was recently raised to formalise an alternative route that had been in existence for many years. The application was supported by the parish and county councils, recognised bodies such as the Ramblers Association and many members of the local community.
However, three objections were lodged and the application was taken to a public hearing.
The outcome of the hearing has yet to be announced. If it finds in favour of the application, it will confirm my faith in 'common sense'. If it finds against the application, more public money will be spent which would have been better spent elsewhere.
