A YOUNG Somerset man has been flown back to the UK after he was badly injured when his family was involved in an horrific car crash as they began a holiday in Portugal last month.
Finn Webber, aged 23, of Combwich, was left in a coma in a Portuguese hospital after he was cut free from the wreckage suffering head injuries and a broken leg and dislocated hip.
All six members of the Webber family were injured when an oil tanker crashed into the two cars in which they were travelling.
Finn’s mother Alessia, known as Ali, and his brother Sam, aged 18, and sisters Megan and 15-year-old Isobel were able to return home despite their injuries, while his father Dan stayed in Portugal to be near his hospital bedside.
Sam and Isabel both suffered broken bones, leaving them unable to walk and having to use a wheelchair and crutches to get around.
This week, an online appeal started by Megan and family friend Iveta Lacy-Hulbert had raised nearly £56,000 to cover the cost of flying Finn home.
He was initially taken to Musgrove Park Hospital, Taunton, for a full body scan and further assessment until a bed became available in Southmead Hospital, Bristol, to start his rehabilitation.
Mrs Webber said there had been a couple of days of ‘ups and downs’ but Finn’s transfer eventually went smoothly.
She said the family were taking things ‘a day at a time’, but so far were delighted with Finn’s progress.
Mrs Webber said in an online post: “He is such a strong, resilient young man. Thank you so much for your continued support, it really helps us to know how much Finn is loved.”
