A SCHEME to give Watchet a designated water sports centre - believed to be the first of its kind in Somerset - took a step forward this week. Organisers behind the project, which has been at least two years in the pipeline, submitted a formal application for planning approval. And if successful, work on the estimated £200,000 development in the Mineral Yard and on the site of dilapidated public toilets on the West Pier could begin by next year. The project has won the backing of a range of potential users, from the Sea Scouts to the town's boat owners, who have formed a committee which has been responsible for pushing the scheme forward. "Getting planning permission is just the first step but obviously a very important one," said spokesman Ray Ventura. "We have got the support of a range of organisations and individuals, including West Somerset's MP Ian Liddell-Grainger. "And we have also had very good support from West Somerset District Council, which owns the land, and Watchet Town Council, which has given us a £2,000 grant to carry out the preparatory work that has allowed us to draw up the plans and get this far." Tony James, former chairman of Watchet Boat Owners Association, said: "We would like this water sports association to be the main marina organisation in the town. "We want to give all water sports users somewhere decent to change and to meet. "It will be the only centre of its kind in the county." In addition to much needed changing rooms, showers and toilets, the new building will also have kitchen and office facilities and a meeting room for around 30 people, which can be used for briefing and training sessions. There will also be storage space for equipment and small boats. As yet, organisers have no firm idea of the cost of the proposal but will seek tenders for the work if they win the go ahead from planners. And they are hoping to win grant aid to cover the bulk of the building work, with the running costs being covered by the users and donations. "Once it is a reality, it has to be self financing," said Mr Ventura. "We believe it's a really exciting project and we are hugely encouraged by the support it has received."
