SIR — I am very concerned about the report that cobbled areas in Dunster are to be "tidied up" by replacing with a flat surface on "health and safety" grounds (Free Press October 15).

Which organisations are deciding this needs to happen and where will the "sanitisation" end? When all of them have been dug up?

The argument re insurance claims doesn't wash as if no owner has been established then it follows that no-one can be sued.

Which local quarry will the re-paving stone come from?

Has English Heritage been consulted as some areas may be deemed to be in the curtilage of listed buildings and therefore protected.

These pavements are a part of the quirky character of the village which people come to visit in their thousands.

Many other historic towns all over the country have retained their cobbles so why shouldn't Dunster?
