ETHIOPIAN journalist Eskinder Nega (pictured), wrongfully imprisoned for nearly seven years, was released on February 14 after years of campaigning by Amnesty International.

That was the good news shared by Minehead’s Amnesty group newsletter editor Susan Mew with those who attended a fundraising quiz night on Friday (February 23).

Eskinder had been jailed for alleged links with opposition groups and was accused of treason and terrorism by the Ethiopian government.

Minehead Amnesty group’s next event marks International Women’s Day on Friday (March 9).

There will be a stall in The Avenue, Minehead, from 10am until noon with letters and petitions for shoppers to sign.

Some of the cases featured include:

* Nazarin Zaghari-Ratcliffe, still in prison in Iran and separated from her little daughter and British husband.

* Egyptian Human Rights lawyer Azza Soliman facing years in prison for defending women’s human rights.

* Tep Vanney, an environmental protector, in prison for resisting eviction from her home in Cambodia.

Amnesty members ask that, while Britain remembers the Suffragettes who fought for votes for women 100 years ago, people concerned about human rights also support brave women in other countries.
