SIR — Last week's Free Press Picture Special on the Minehead Harbour Festival was a delightful illustration of Minehead's community working together to create a happy and successful event. Unveiling the new maritime heritage plaques launched the harbour festival in fine style - congratulations to all who took part! It was disappointing that a misunderstanding resulted in a rather sour note in the accompanying report. I can assure readers that funding for the heritage plaques project has not run out and work is in progress to provide explanatory information at their site on the harbour wall. As the chairman of Minehead Development Trust, the body that employs and line-manages Stephen Hooper (Minehead Vision Manager), I am very pleased to confirm that he has delivered all that was required by the maritime heritage plaques project on time and well within the Heritage Lottery Fund budget. Stephen commissioned and co-ordinated a series of story-telling and sea shanty workshops, enabling local schools and community groups to research the history and folklore of Minehead's maritime heritage. These workshops provided inspiration for the artist, Sue Webber, who collaborated with maritime author John Gilman to design and produce the beautiful plaques. The unveiling of the plaques was accompanied by an exhibition of Sue's design work and the publication of an illustrated booklet about the project, which is now on sale in the Minehead Information Centre (in the Beach Café, close to the West Somerset Railway station). Among his many other activities, Stephen will now work on the next phase of the project, drawing from the booklet and other sources to provide information at the site of the plaques. Our aim is to complete this as soon as possible, ideally before the end of the summer season. Jenny Lennon-Wood, Chairman, Minehead Development Trust.
