A SQUADRON of air cadets is seeking to expand – and the group has been visiting local schools recently to recruit new members for its force.
The 1013 (Minehead & District) Squadron, Air Training Corps recently visited Minehead Middle and Danesfield schools as well as West Somerset College, to interest 12 to 17-year-olds in joining its ranks.
The group of boys and girls meets on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 7.30pm until 9.30pm at the Minehead Joint Cadet Centre in Alcombe Road.
Activities include learning first aid, playing sport, being given talks and visits on a range of subjects from armed response to flying.
“It’s two hours of learning and having fun and the cadets learn how to work as a team and to lead. It looks good on their CVs too,” said Civilian Instructor Ann Hartgen of the squadron.
“The programme is very varied and there are also regular camps with activities and events, from laser and normal shooting to going bowling at Christmas.”
She said the squadron supplied the uniform and being a cadet was an inexpensive and enjoyable pastime.
