SIR — The recent suffering of West Somerset people caused by the closure of our arterial road, the A39, forcibly reminds us how little investment there has been in the West Somerset road structure since the last war.

With many pinch points and bad accident record, this lane is a disgrace to the highways authority.

Sadly, after spending half a million pounds designing it, county aborted the badly needed villages by-pass scheme. This left West Somerset with a road system little improved since the 1930s whilst the rest of the county moved on.

Having been silent so far, I ask what our elected county representatives are doing to press for the major improvements so obviously needed to make the A39 lane suitable for the 21st century?

Huge sums of money have been spent elsewhere in Somerset; surely it must be our turn soon?
