SIR — Re. 'Seeking Hinkley Funds' (Free Press, November 7): In support of the many charities and organisations that were encouraged to apply for money from the Hinkley fund, I must comment on the fact that we were in the first instance asked to complete an 'Expression of Interest' form for the administrators to establish if those claiming were eligible and fitted the criteria. At the top of the form we were asked to give a title to the project. In our case, we stated 'replacement doors and windows due to rotting' and, in our application regarding the impact of work at Hinkley C, we stated that transport delays would affect our youth sporting teams getting to our award-winning recreation ground. The ground is used every Saturday, and often Sundays as well, by our youth teams who play for the Taunton Youth League. Therefore, we supply a much needed venue and facilities for teams which travel from all over Somerset. During the Football Festival weekends, there are teams from as far afield as Glasgow. The traffic delays in West Somerset are bad enough now, never mind when the new roundabout at Washford Cross is commenced. (The fact that it is going to take nine months to build is quite beyond me, with all the machinery available to contractors these days.) This argument, however much dismissed by the powers that be, IS going to affect every single person living in our corner of West Somerset and must have serious effect on all businesses and communities in the area. The administrator reading the first line of our application, which included the title of the project, must have known that we were probably not going to be eligible, yet we were asked to fill a full application form. Anyone who has ever filled in these forms knows how long it takes and, if there was the slightest doubt about our not fitting the criteria, we should not have been asked to continue. Like all volunteer groups, we give our time gladly to hopefully benefit our various communities or causes and we cannot afford to waste time or effort when trying to raise much needed funds only to have some unseen administrator, or group of, deciding we were a non-starter, anyway. Finally, and without any feeling whatsoever of 'sour grapes', could someone enlighten me as to how Somerset Youth and Community Sailing Association's award for new dinghies / boats on Durleigh reservoir be attributed to the impact of Hinkley C? Am I missing something? I rest my case. Graham Story, Treasurer, Allerford and Selworthy Community Hall.
