WEST Somerset College student Alice Chamberlain has been chosen as this year's Watchet Carnival Queen.

Alice, 13, was among seven entrants judged for Watchet LIVE by Bob Hornby, Loretta Whetlor and Liz Stewart.

Courtney Bland, a 12-year-old pupil at Danesfield School, was picked as Alice's attendant.

The younger children, whose names were pulled out of boxes at random, were princesses Jessica Rees, eight, and six-year-old Jodie Prescott, and princes Ben Prescott, 11, and Thomas Sweeney, five.

The annual Carnival Queen competition was held at the Royal British Legion Club last Saturday, June 18.

Event organiser Julie Prescott said: "We were extremely pleased that turnout for this year's competition was so high.

"The children, supported by their families, had a great time dancing the night to music provided by the Legion and the adults were very generous in buying raffle tickets with all proceeds from the evening going into Carnival Club funds."

A spokesman for the judges said: "All the contestants were fantastic and it was a very, very close result between the eventual winners and the rest of the entrants.

"We were also extremely pleased to have some entries from outside Watchet taking part in the competition, too."

Alice and her entourage will be in the town's carnival parade on Sunday, July 30 on their brand new 'royal float'.

Watchet LIVE expressed thanks to the judges, Watchet Royal British Legion and everyone who supported the event.
