150 years ago – December 16th 1871

* All the inmates of Williton workhouse were treated to a sumptuous dinner of stewed rabbit, the kind gift of Sir Alexander and Lady Hood, of St Audries

*A party of ladies and gentlemen from Knowlewell House, Bishops Lydeard, enjoyed skating on the Sandhill ponds.

* The long-established inn at Dunster, known as The George, was to be put up for sale by auction.

* H H Hole, photographer, of Williton, announced that he had introduced a new style of portrait known as The Lorne.

100 years ago – December 17th 1921

* A service of praise for the Irish peace settlement as held at Watchet Baptist Church. It was conducted by the Rev T Brain.

* A Government inspector of council houses told Dulverton RDC that the dwellings in Winsford were the best he had seen.

* Dulverton RDC was told by the surveyor that the Withiel Florey roads had not had any stone on them for five or six years.

* The GWR would run a special excursion train on the Minehead branch to Taunton for the Somerset Charity Cup final between Watchet and Radstock.

50 years ago – December 18th 1971

* William Gates, of Helwell Green, escaped with a black eye and cuts when his crane toppled into Watchet harbour while loading a Dutch vessel.

* Bicknoller Parish Council would only approve two houses being built at Great Moore, next to old people’s bungalows and the village inn.

* David Beach left Williton Players to be a drama adviser in Rotherham after producing ‘Nostalgia and the Oasis’.

* As the population age increased, Minehead Senior Citizens Club was told the town would have its own social services office in 1972.
