Sir — With reference to the recently reported application for permission to build a new nursing home on part of the old mill site off Anchor Street in Watchet, I personally think this is a good thing once the problems of access are overcome.

But, and this is a big but, what I do not want to see is a repeat of the disastrously-designed buildings now blighting the appearance of the corner of South Street and St Decumans Road.

A modern approach to new building design can be welcomed if it is sensitive to the area, but it is a complete mystery how that development passed the planners' scrutiny.

I think we all believed that the new buildings would echo those on the opposite corner. How wrong we were.

I realise that we all have an opportunity to consult planning proposals, but the architects' drawings and skilfully adjusted aspects, complete with landscaping are very misleading.

The East Quay project has been a steep learning curve for us all.
